 United States Passport Application

U.S. PassportWhat is a passport?
A passport is an official government document that certifies one's identity and citizenship. It is also an internationally recognized travel document. A valid United States passport may be used to enter most foreign countries.

Nearly 7 million U.S. passports are issued every year.

Who issues United States passports?

Only the U.S. Department of State has the authority to issue United States passports. This website only provides information how to apply for a passport, and the necessary application forms. We do not issue passports.

Where do I go to get a passport?
To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of 6,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States, including many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, most of which serve only those who are departing urgently. Appointments are required in such cases.
